Stress Analysis

A sound stress analysis forms the basis for any successful engineering project.

The analysis will demonstrate the major structural load paths and hopefully show that stress levels and loads are below the allowable levels permitted or, if not, recommend mitigating actions to solve the issue.

Here at Woods Analysis we will produce a detailed stress analysis to meet your engineering needs. The analysis will typically include:

  • Free body diagrams to give visual confirmation of the load path
  • Load case generation including safety factors pertinent to the code(s) against which the structure is designed against
  • Hand calculations, using methods appropriate to the industry sector, to show stress levels and joint loads in the structure
  • Comparison of the loads/stresses with the allowable levels based on the design code giving a quick visual summary of the critical areas

Woods Analysis covers a number of industry sectors including:

  • Energy and Nuclear
  • Structural steelwork for Civil applications
  • Aerospace

Structural Steelwork

At Woods Analysis we can analyse any type of structural steelwork whether it is a simple beam to replace a load bearing wall as part of a home improvement, to the complex framework of a large building.

All structural members and joints are checked for strength and stability and remedial action recommended where the design is found to be non-compliant.

All analysis is carried out using recognised UK and European steelwork design codes.

Cranes and Lifting Accessories

The analysis of cranes and lifting attachments is similar in principle to our structural steelwork analysis, however the analysis conforms to a different set of design codes which dictates the applicable safety factors and material strength.

As with our structural steelwork analysis, all members and joints are checked for strength and stability. Any areas which do not meet the requirements are highlighted and recommendations made to ensure the design meets the design criteria.

Our analysis will demonstrate compliance to recognised UK and European crane and lifting attachment design codes.

Machine Design

At Woods Analysis, the function of the mechanical engineer is not solely confined to stress analysis, machine design also forms another important part of our work.

A mechanical system, i.e. machine, usually involves a power source and drive train to perform an action. An example could be an electric motor driving a pulley via a reduction gearbox to hoist a load..

The list below is typical of the items we assess here at Woods Analysis:

  • Motor requirements – electric, hydraulic, pneumatic
  • Gear trains
  • Pulley systems
  • Screw jack systems
  • Wheels and bearings, skates
  • Rail systems

Aerospace

Woods Analysis can also cater for your aerospace analysis needs including:

  • Static analysis of metallic structure including primary structure
  • Analysis of repairs beyond SRM limits
  • Systems brackets

Our engineers have worked in past for a number of high profile clients including:

  • Airbus
  • Boeing
  • BAE Systems
  • Lockheed Martin
  • Rolls-Royce
